Community heating and integrated infrastructure will have a 'key role' in
sustainable communities
Energy experts have called for the UK government to endorse a joined-up approach to sustainable infrastructure. The UK Green Building Council and the Zero Carbon Hub have published a report that recommends an integrated solution to utilities that includes community heating, water harvesting and water re-use. Planning and delivering this in a combined process is stated as being the most cost effective way of enabling low carbon communities.
Furthermore, the report concludes that district heating will be integral to this new approach:
"The potential benefits for community-scale energy and heat networks to reduce emissions from the built environment are particularly strong. Fundamentally this derives from the scope to use the waste heat from electrical generation within the built environment, that otherwise is rejected from conventional centralised thermal generating plant. It is already becoming recognised that they should play a key role within the sustainable community infrastructure framework."
If you would like to read the full report, it is available on the UK Green Building Council website.
